Microsoft knows far, far more about the software market than any of 
us.  After all, they can spend unlimited millions on market research and 
apparently do.  In addition, public remarks by people like Gates are 
scripted in a way that would make even George Bush look like a 
marionette.  Hence, when Gates says that he embraces open source but thinks 
that the GPL is a threat to the software industry, they must be really, 
really feeling the heat.

In the future, no one will accept an operating system that is closed 
source.  Applications, perhaps.  But the operating system?  Never.
