I had failed attempt to respond to this posting last week
(user error!). I could not reach the web site effectively
last week, but I found the Star Office news on SUN's
corporate web site: www.sun.com/staroffice.
What DISA actually is doing is replacing another unix office
suite with Star Office on some 10,000 unix workstations. No
shift from Windows is taking place, at best we can hope that
the DOD's wholesale conversion to Windows is arrested some.
I could not find any other reference to the Ford story. But
what I do know is that Ford, in Europe, is advancing the
state of telematics in their vehicles and will be using the
existing wireless services. Much of this stuff has an
'embedded' aspect and Windows is really not very attractive
in this market. But oss systems software is not the leading
'embedded systems' choice either right now, except with Nokia.
