Don't forget about PostgreSQL - which has been free software all the way, and it shows in the quality of code. It also demonstrates that free software projects can produce quality "industrial strength" products without just mimicking commercial products or having a commercial product as "seeding".
While it is definitely in the same league regarding robustness and functionality as SAP-DB, the source coe is way more readabe and maintainable. The Interbase code is actually quite a mess, though the product runs nicely and stable - but not quite as good on Linux platforms.
