Hi Dave, I assume that was a rhetorical question but there really is an answer. "We haven't solved the problem". 'the problem' is different for everyone because there are different perspectives and therefore different needs. While a certain level of technological complexity may solve everyone's problem. On certain fringes the requirements for hardware and or bandwidth and or maintenance cause resistance to build to 'the solution'. So, while open source solutions may exist......there is no 'band of merry men' to do the installs and maintenance. So, other solutions are sought that have a better balance.
