In case anyone is interested, when I attempted to upgrade my 2 laptops from Red Hat 7.2 and 8.0 respectively, the graphical installer only offered to install; it didn't offer the upgrade option. Be careful about this.
I asked Michael, who said the magic is the command
upgradeany
to be given at the boot prompt (when the install CD boots)
