Hi,
First, thanks to Wayne for the Firefox feedback - I thought the alleged "spyware" within firefox was unlikely myself, but you never know.
Secondly, the posting from Will Ross re printing reminded me of a major problem we've had with certain web apps: The lack of proper control over final lay-out when you print stuff over several pages.
Web printing is notoriously difficult, of course, due to the fact that HTML is so oriented towards display. Fixed web pages often have "printer friendly" versions, but this is more tricky with dynamically created web reports etc.
One of our applications - a "Web Pivot Reporter" that functionally mimicks Excel Pivot tables in a browser environments - was initially rejected by many users due to messed up lay-out as soon as the dynamically created "pivot tables" extended over several pages. Their primary requirement was that reports should be easy to print, since they in general prefer to deal with information on paper and not on screen.
I presume many others have faced similar problems - anybody know of FOSS solutions that are simple and robust without requiring a lot of fiddling by users?
We have considered using intermediate formats like PDF (save HTML to PDF and then print the PDF), but it's a hassle.
