Just tested it with an ubuntu 11.10: same problem.

So either my board is faulty and this just doesn't show up with the utility 
from stm or there is some trick involved we don't know about yet.

I added some hexdump code to jtag_libusb_bulk_write and ..._read and the 
output seemed sane. Just it often received wrong data, e.g when reading the 
cpu id.

I think the next thing I'll do is to use usbmon and compare the communication 
to the stuff the windoze util from stm does.
