The goal for openocd end-users, is not to have to learn Gerrit but is to improve their debug toolchain and patch openocd ! That's really not the same. If you want to become an expert of a tool as Gerrit, please read the specific doc of the tool. Gerrit is just a tool for openocd project. End-users wanting to send patch should not need to learn Gerrit, but they want to get a Tuto giving a simple steps-by-steps on the how-to send a openocd patch. A patch for SVN , guerrit ... this is not the topic, they want to send patches. How many designers use GCC but know almost nothing about it ! I know, you will reply they should know GCC ... but that's not the reality.
