You must be *trying* to make it sound complex.  There is
no "negotiation" involved at all.  Or "overriding" either...

  (a) there are four control knobs to diddle, and
  (b) changing one knob doesn't change *ANY* other knob.

That's pretty much the standard model for how to operate
controls everywhere.  Having hidden coupling between
controls is error prone.
