Yeah, I turned that off, as chaining seems like the wrong default; off
the SUBJECT, do you happen to know why it is?

Unfortunately, the docs do not say what will happen in my case, and my
assumption was that the first patch in each series would become a reply
to the original summary message, with each subsequent patch a reply to
their respective replies.  I can lower my expectations slightly to
accommodate the present reality, but I still think I may be missing how
to do this properly.
