The issue is the endianess of the TAP register. If All MIPs targets have a
little-endian TAP register then the patch is a general fix. In the 6/2009
thread, Nico Coesel suggested the Au1100 set to big endian does not have this
problem. For Drasko , myself and others with MIPs big-endian hardware cores, the
TAP register is always little-endian and the patch is necessary.

It's not entirely clear from what you write whether you
consider the change appropriate for the master branch or
not. Not everything that "makes it work in my case" should
be committed to master branch....
Sometimes we(openocd maintainers) let patches slip
between the cracks(which is why I post "any outstanding
patches?" posts every once in a while).
