There are 2 points in this thread, i think:

A) openpbx.org development is running slow while asterisk is evolving
including more bugs than features (i am fighting against an upgrade of
asterisk which has given me more troubles than every other things).

B) what is the use of openpbx.org in voip world.

------- my opinions

a) i have been waiting months for asterisk to have some features wchich
at the moment are not there, so i switched to openpbx.
Openpbx is surely evolving less than asterisk, but openpbx does what i
need and asterisk does not.
Openpbx is evolving less because it does what *WE* need (We = people
interested in development) and does it well. Asterisk is developing
faster but still does not do what (al least) I need.
T38 finally working and Stun (which i'll commit soon) are two of these
things. There is nothing around supporting these 2 features.
Freeswitch is a great project and has good promises, but at the moment
it is *NOTHING* so it shouldn't be included in our considerations.
Maybe, in a year or two, it will be working and gaining a userbase (now
it has a lot of interest around the project but that's all).

In this context, openpbx has only one problem: the userbase.
We should try to catch more users and developers to make things
working. By the way, i have setup astfree86.org (thanks to steve who had
the idea) which we could use as a blog to inform the world about what we
are doing.

once again: openpbx is not evolving 'cause it does what it's supposed to
do, and does it well.

b) think about the next 5 years. Here in italy *MANY* people are
switching to voip both at home and at office. There is a company who
gives PSTN geographic numbers *FOR FREE*. Anyone with freepbx could
setup his own pbx in a few minutes if he was a sysadmin. dynamic ips,
lack of stun make the rest a PITA. Openpbx will revert this.
Companies have problems with voip 'cause they cannot fax in/out.
Openpbx solves all this and opens the doors to REAL VOIP.
Asterisk should do it, but it actually does not. They are involved in
making digium cards working better. In 5 years, *to me* a lot of people
will not use PSTN anymore.
We are here now. Asterisk is not.

---------- IN CONCLUSION.

Let's get more users and let the world know we are here.
Don't stop and let this 0.2 out ASAP. 0.3 is already here!

Register an account on freshmeat and let's start announcing openpbx
there. It will work. (let's point out we are free from hardware timers too!)

Max

P.S. Apache 2.2 is out but the majority of sites is still using 1.3.
Less features ? Yes, but working well.

P.S.2 do not forget to register openpbx on freshmeat ASAP.
