You're free to lobby libusb folks to deal with the problem more actively. Or lobby your favourite Linux distro to fix it for you. I guess Ludovic already made a bunch of work for it, namely he's the actual user of libusb, he created a patch and it has been there ever since. And he took the other logical step you can do with open source: publish a fork [1]. Even though I understand that it indirectly affects OpenSC usage, resources (time) are constrained.
