from glancing over it libxml2 looks fine as it has the SAX interface I'm
mainly interested in. So it might be easier for us (me) to change to
libxml2.

my 2 cent:

we are already using libxml2 [1] and the c++ wrapper [2] for DOM (read/write) and SAX parsing in several projects, so my preference is clear ;)

i used it only for xml files up to ~150 mb (sax) and there were no abnormal loading times. but for collada we're expecting file sizes 10-100 times as large, i suppose.
