Does the scons build automatically look for basic libraries like png, jpg, gif, tif?

as i'm new to scons i have some basic questions:
* why do you offer both the scons and autotools build method in
   OpenSG?
* for configure, i had to add a large paramlist (--with-qt,
--with-tif, etc) to get it to work for our particular linux
setup here, is this "configure" step also necessary with scons?

Over the last few years I have seen(and been bitten too) by the autotools build not loooking for IMHO *basic* libraries such as gif/tif/jpg/png.  People spend  an hour or more building from source to find that OpenSG can't load basic formats and then either give up(and move on to other SG's that I won't name here) or send an e-mail to various lists asking for help, thinking OpenSG is somehow broken.  Once they figure out that they need a couple --with- options they spend another hour or three rebuilding it. If the build doesn't currently find these few libs, my wishlist is that it does :)

My only other gripe with OpenSG is limited selection of binary dist's that are provided.  I guess I would like to see something like the following: FC-newest, RHEL, Suse, OS X, Windows.  For 1.6, some of these targets were hit except for OS X and the RHEL4 build wasn't with the system compiler.  On the download page it also lists a "snapshot" build with each OS...but I don't really know what that means. So maybe some better wording is in order or an explanation at the top of the page.

I think OpenSG is quite powerful and more people should be exposed to it.  Unfortunately getting there may take some time.  Maybe taking a hint from the OSS motto, "Release often, Release early" would help out with world domination ;) because many features that are great get added often and dissemenated (website or releases) to John Q. Public very infrequently.  I have heard many times on the list to "just build it from cvs, or try a dailybuild.  I don't think that is what users want to hear.  Anyhow,  that's it for my 2 cents.
