Hello Toni,
  I have written a few exporters for max in the past via the SDK as 
well as Maxscript. If using the SDK, the process is a little 
complicated because the way data is stored internally can be a little 
convoluted at times. Fortunately, there's the IGame interface which 
dramatically simplifies the process (can be downloaded from sparks 
website). I would be more than happy to donate the source from my early 
exporters to this project. (see below for feature list)

features:
- mesh support
   - organization and packing for common vertex formats    - positions, 
uvs, normals, binormals
   - removal of duplicate vertices when generating index facesets
   - resamples vertex positions based on pivot point
- material export
   - full support of basic properties (color, opacity, etc.)
   - option to copy used textures to export directory      - option to 
render procedural maps on export to desired resolution
   - full map support
- other
   - bounding boxes
   - can convert transforms to other coordinate systems on export

I think I have another exporter lying around that handles preliminary 
animation (no biped and such), lights, cameras, and environment (fog). 
The code is a little old (max v6-v7), but should be a big help in 
getting something started. Who knows, it may compile for v8 & v9 right 
away (haven't tried).
