Infiscape has been working on a commercial 3D Studio Max plugin/exporter. It's original purpose was to allow a user to not only export a scene but also connect to a VR system and receive live updates from 3D Studio as the user makes changes. You can see some models that we exported directly from 3D studio to osb for a demo at:
http://www.infiscape.com/project_retail.php We also spent a lot of time developing a shader that tries to make the export as realistic as possible. In other words, instead of just exporting the geometry, color, and diffuse textures we export the scene with diffuse, specular, self illumination, opacity, normal, and reflection maps.
