Yes, FBOViewport works in my initial version.
There are two issues I have with a CVS checkout:
1) Time. (could be done quickly or could take hours)
2) Stability. (I don't consider a checkout to be a stable version)
So I'm afraid I have to cope with that memory issue for the time being.

strange, you did get images from the FBOViewport in your initial
version, only it was requiring lots of memory, right ?
I wonder if you are running into some bug that was fixed after the 1.8
release. Would it be possible for you to use/try a more recent version,
i.e. a cvs checkout ?
