ok, in that case always using MDW seems even more like the right thing
to do:
MDW can have viewports added to itself. These viewports get replicated
on the servers, but don't show up locally.
Additionally it can have a clientWindow with its own viewport(s) on it.
This one is rendered locally on the client and its viewports don't show
up on the servers.
For the desktop case you'd set up a MDW with one server and viewport for
the ortho view plus a client window that renders the scene locally.
For the CAVE case you add more servers and viewports for the different
sides of the cave and optionally leave out the client window.

        Cheers,
                Carsten
