On second thoughts, maybe what you mean is that now that the HG is out there, there is a lot less need for the configuration of a grided region having a local asset DB? People who want to keep their assets under their control but be able to interact with other people, can now do it via HG.

But it strikes me that now, if you wanted to retain your regions assets locally, you could set up your region as a hypergrid enabled region, as Hypergrid regions use the local asset store (there is conceptually no global).

In view of this, I'd like to completely remove the asset_database option. This would mean that in standalone and hypergrid modes, the db used would always be local and in grid mode the grid asset service would always be used.

Are there any objections to this?
I don't understand enough of the asset_database issue, but what you say here is not entirely correct. Hypergrid regions can be in grid mode too. I have several HG regions connected to OSGrid, and all of the regions in the UCI Grid are HG-ed. They're all configured with asset_database = "grid".
