As you've said, I followed the existing practice, which was to increase the version number locally. We've been using a locally-versioned Prebuild for a long time. There's no harm in changing the versioning practice next time, although I don't know if adding a textual string will work.
BTW I tried to submit these patches to the main Prebuild project as well, to zero response. I looked around that site and it's as dead as a parrot.
