IMHO, this is a change that should have been discussed beforehand. This is just the kind of change we try to avoid making without consultation.
That said, I am against this change. A possible alternative would be to include this as an alternate configuration, commented out, i these files and maybe document how to change it, but to change the default is not the way we do this. It will play hell with installations where people use operating system features and/or external programs to rotate and/or archive logs. Options are fine, changing defaults without discussion is not.
