Ron,

Thanks for looking into OpenSLP.

What you must understand is that this project is open source, and that
work on the project is not currently sponsored by any one company. There
are people on the project (such as Matthew, for instance) who've been
assigned by their respective companies to spend SOME time on the project
to ensure that it meets their own needs.

However, normally such an infrastructure project is fully funded by a
company with somewhat altruistic motives. The OpenSLP project was begun
by Caldera, for instance -- a Linux distribution company that went
defunct about 7 years ago. Unfortunately, despite the desire by dozens
of people around the world to keep the project alive, several unrelated
events have converged to keep it (more or less) floundering.

1. No company is willing to take the financial initiative to completely
own the project--not even Novell, who currently pays my salary.

2. The IETF SLP standards work was significantly undermined by various
other service advertising standardization efforts--both in and out of
the IETF. This has lead the world to the general conclusion that SLP is
"dead". I quote "dead" because, despite the general sentiment, nothing
better has really come along to replace it (most of the other SA
standardization efforts have also failed, for one reason or another).

Due to these circumstances, service advertising has become something
like auditing standards -- everyone wants a standard, but no one can
agree on what it should be, so it's simpler to just ignore the problem
for now.

OpenSLP will continue to move along, but probably not as fast as most
people would like, unless they are willing to do the work themselves.

:)
