You just started in the middle :-)

Agreed - it should be simple to start a project in the Networking
community to investigate replacing DHCP; it should also be easy to
get Dave Miner to participate and give credibility to the effort :-)

Part of the "venue" problem is that the experts in DHCP are mostly
over in Networking land; the fact that some of them also hang out
in ARC land is cool, but while they are /here/ they aren't wearing
their "Networking hats".

The challange will be to enumerate the existing Committed interfaces
exported by Sun-DHCP and map those to ones provided by ISC-DHCP.
Once you have done that, you have a good indication of the gaps,
and the transition work that you need to address, since we can't
simply arbitrarily "forget" our promises - think of this as a
house of cards and you are proposing to replace several of the
foundation-level cards without causing the structure to tumble
down :-)

When you get to the ARC, we will look at the old interfaces and
their associated promises, the new interfaces and promises and the
gaps between them and how you manage the transition. The closer
the two are aligned, the easier the review will be.
