Well my experiences are completely different :-( I tried to do this several times and _always_ failed because it was not possible to find a supporter from inside Sun. You may have no problems with simple changes but unfortunately, there is no public documentation of the build system used by ON. This is a big problem for larger works. But even for smaller changes, ther is no visible will from insidde Sun. I did put a _lot_ of effort into fixing bugs in the Bourne Shell and into making the Borne Shell compile without warnings. The source is published and was advertized many times. ----> No interest from Sun so far. Even a much smaller ecample failed: I made diff(1) compile without warnings and made it 64-Bit clean. The source is published and was advertized many times. ----> No interest from Sun so far. It would be so simple to start a collaboration if there is just a bit of interest in getting the community involved. > > > Perhaps, but I don't want to work on star. > > > > Why? > > The honest answer to that is because you seem to believe that it is perfect. It seems that you don't read most of my mail. I know that there is a lot that may be enhanced in star and this will of course be done in the future. If people at Sun like some specific topics to be done first, they need to discuss things with me first. This did never happen even though there are several mailing lists for discussing star development. It seems that the main problem is the missing interest for cooperaing with the community by people from inside Sun. I am of course interested, some people need to move. I really hope we will be able to find a way to have a cooperation with the community as it would be a pity if willing people from outside Sun would stop their work because they are disappointed.
