It doesn't necessarily generate a fork. It *does* mean that if you want to support this platform, you will need an additional bit of code in a separate repository from ON. The code can move there. Sun isn't going to keep this platform code in ON, because frankly, the current support is badly incomplete (basic functionality like the power button, battery/power management, and numerous extra Sun keyboard keys are simply not supported in ON today.) Even worse, going forward there will be no driver support for the framebuffer on this platform, as there is *no* freely redistributable device driver for it, and the SXCE distribution is ending.

Wanting to continue supporting this platform in OpenSolaris is, unfortunately, at this point just tilting at windmills.

(The implications of the demise of SXCE for other SPARC workstations with unsupported graphics cards in them are left as an exercise for the reader.)
