Actually, let me clarify this statement. We're decreasing the resources going into making a JDS Linux distribution - JDS the desktop is alive and well. The main problem with JDS built on SuSE was the fact that we never really had a good target market, the resources to pull off doing a really good job, and difficult relationships with our partners at times. > Using Gnome as the base was the big mistake, since it's only good > looking (clean, integrated), but under the hood it's not flexible > (>for me< it also look outdated). Right - you hit the nail on the head there, *for you*. JDS and GNOME was targeted at the transactional worker, those that didn't need flexibility under the hood. They just needed a desktop that worked, didn't interfere with their productivity - and in my opinion, worked very well for that purpose. > Better take a look at KDE. Not so - I think the GNOME community is starting to see the ISVs coming to the platform. That's going to take some time still, but we already have some notable parties at the table - Real, Adobe, VMWare, Eclipse, Nokia, not to mention the likes of OpenOffice and Moz/Firefox. Ever seen - http://www.gnome.org/~davyd/footware.shtml Look at the distributions that ship GNOME as the default desktop? See how I can swing things around the other way? But let's not do this, it doesn't help anyone and I'm going to ignore the rest of your mail. I have tremendous respect for what the KDE guys are doing and guys like Stefan and Ken are doing a rocking job. I think the big win we can take out of this all, is collaborating with each other to improve [Open]Solaris the desktop - and quite frankly any one running KDE on Solaris is just as important to me to those running combinations of GNOME, XFCE, FVWM, Enlightenment, etc...
