OpenSolaris DOES have an independant controlling body: the CAB (of
which I'm a member).

Granted, but you seem to be forgetting that is wasn't that long ago when
Solaris was the top tier open source platform.

I respectfully disagree. Yes, the GPL-zealots (who think that anything
that isn't GPL is evil) won't contribute, but open minded geeks will
contribute. We've already seen evidence of that.

It will. Don't forget that Linux has a head start here.

As Shawn says, Sun has explained numerous times why the GPL can't be
used. And I suspect that many GPL projects are that way by default,
with the original authors not necesarily realising the consequences
of their choice.

Each license has its pros and cons, but for me, the CDDL is superior
to the GPL because it (the CDDL) imposes fewer restrictions.

DTrace. Zones. Stable ABI. And so on.

See my comments above.

1. Companies can contribute proprietory code, safe in the knowledege
that they can keep their IP to themselves.

2. Individuals who want their contributions to be open, yet don't want
to restrict the rights of others, will be happy with the CDDL.
