Please take a few minutes to read about the CAB on the opensolaris.org web site. In < 5 minutes you will discover that the CAB is NOT appointed by Sun (not all of it, anyway). There are currently 5 people on the CAB: 2 Sun employees appointed by Sun (both of whom have proven to me their ability to do what's right), 2 community members (me and Al Hopper) that THE COMMUNITY VOTED INTO OFFICE, and 1 representing the "open source world" at large, Roy Fielding of the Apach Foundation. You're not doing this conversation any favours by not doing some basic research. > are still in the clutches of bureaucracy proves just that - Sun is > putting a lot of overhead into the process guarding it's own concerns > and interests.) THat is all supposition on your part, and is wrong. Solaris has a 20 year history behind it; it's not a development that can be opened overnight. And the people on on the Development Process team (Al and I included) are VERY intent on doing the right thing. Again, this speculation on your part isn't really helping the conversation. Read the various background bits and FAQs on the opensolaris.org web site, read and join the cab-discuss mailing list. The latter is where the conversations about the new governance model are being discussed. The proposal for the next generation CAB, tentatively called the OpenSOlaris Governing Board, for example gets rid of the Sun appointed positions. Sun have asked (and empowered) us, as community representatives, to do what we think is right for OpenSolaris. And if that means that they (Sun) have to make some adjustments, they are prepared to do so. For example, how do you think the Studio tools became $0 for OpenSolaris contributors? We (the CAB) have the ear of management and executives that can make things happen, and they DO support us. Rome wasn't built in a day, so please, give us time and the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes the wheels of change turn slower than we'd like, but doesn't necessarily mean that change isn't desired or being worked on. -- Rich Teer, SCNA, SCSA, OpenSolaris CAB member President, Rite Online Inc.
