The status area is a terminology being used in X11 window system BTW. In that case, please use input mode switch key sequences instead. The above is for UTF-8 locales by the way. If you're interested in Russian KOI8-R locale, you can use Contrl+T, Control+Space, or Compose c c key sequences to toggle between Russian and English.
