Soalris can be great as a desktop OS if you are willing to take the time. Oh
and yes it is stable too.

If you want an MSN Messenger replacement GAIM is great, is has to be available
via blastwave...go check for yourself: http://www.blastwave.org/

There are numerous resources for installing packages,
http://www.sunfreeware.com/ , http://www.pkgsrc.org/ ,
http://www.blastwave.org/ and http://www.openpkg.org/ are all great for
managing your packages in ways similar to what you would expect with say Debian
or Gentoo.

Admitedly Sound hardware under Solaris is not great but maybe you'll get lucky
and yours will work "out of the box", I guess this could be alleviated by
checking the HCL at
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/sol/components/views/disk_controller_all_results.page1.html
. Then you could go purchase a card on the list, hopefully the AU$30 that it
would set you back for a compatible sound card won't be too much of an issue?

Plus Solaris 10 as well as the Express and community release all come with
StarOffice, working with school docs should be a breeze.

I guess if you run into any issues there is a great community here to lend a
hand too!

Go to the SDLC and try out build 23, I found it to be a great build, maybe you
will too.
