had a smarter package handling, and if it could be installed as a

There are several bundles or clusters of software that you can select, you
dont need to install everything. Whether those clusters match users needs
is another discussion and one which has been touched on here before. With
jumpstart you can select or reject individual packages[1].
I have to ask what you mean by smarter package handling?
From blog comments and emails I get the impression that people in general
dont think the SVR4 package and patch system is that bad. In fact I have
yet to hear any serious comments internally about what is wrong with the
architecture, even from those who want to change it.
One thing that comes up every time packaging is discussed is why cant it be
made more like apt-get or pkg-get. The specific requirement here seems to
be that people want to select a package for download or upgrade and have
the tool handle the requirements for them. pkg-get already implements this,
and there has been discussion here in the past regarding how blastwave,
sunfreeware et. al. will progress with this approach. Solaris customers can
use Sun Update Manager to get the latest patches from Sun, this too will
trundle off to the patch server, and sort out requirements. These
approaches work within the architecture. And the architecture then provides
for things like Live Upgrade, Zones and Diskless clients to work.
Having said all that I do think there is improvement needed in the tools.
