Since I'm going to ask a question about some problems porting a particular app
to
[Open]Solaris (in another thread), it occurred to me: why not have a forum for
that topic
in general? The more apps run on [Open]Solaris, the better it is for everyone.
 Further,
in some cases it might be a matter of discussion what's best done by changing
the
app, and what might justify some sort of cross-platform compatibility feature
being
added to the OS. So it touches on both marketing and technical issues, outreach
(in the form of documentation or other assistance to porting efforts), and
perhaps
approachability too (insofar as tools are easy to use, frequently requested
features
are incorporated when practicable, and documented in a way that's of real help).

If there's already a place for that sort of thing (perhaps not opensolaris.org,
but on
some other Sun site maybe), then it could probably use some publicity. But
even if
there is, since it touches on the OS (and esp. since those wanting compatiblity
enhancements can now do some of the work themselves, assuming they can convince
a sponsor that it's worthwhile and decently designed, or in case they want it
badly
enough to maintain their own patches even without that), perhaps opensolaris.org
still should have some place for such discussion. Eventually, Janus will emerge
for increased Linux compatibility (and will presumably have its own forum), and
perhaps xen will have potential beyond just Linux compatibility. But native
ports
will still often be more desirable, or sometimes may be the only viable
alternative,
so while this topic has some connection to those too, I think it's nevertheless
distinct from all those it bears some distant connection to.
