Doesn't the e1000g driver have a compiled in table for supported
hardware, so that it isn't that easy (impossible?) to just add a new
driver alias entry?

Should be "svcadm clear ..."

That seems to be the failed result of the e1000g driver
verifying the HW's pci id against its buildin list of 
supported e1000g devices.
