In a datacenter running some flavours of *nix and standard tools like tar working on only a fraction of systems is deadly. If build-in compression is important to you you should try star. On the other hand a gzcat test.tar.gz |tar xf - or a gunzip < test.tar.gz | tar xf- isn't that hard to remeber either and it should work on every *nix.
