Another question: How many Solaris developers are there at Sun?
That would be confidential Sun information since it would possibly
reveal Sun internal structure that we may not wish to reveal.
On the other hand we probably don't actually know for sure how many
Solaris developers there are, there are people who work in the Solaris
organisation and there are people who contribute to Solaris that work
in other parts of Sun. Then there are those who have contributed to
Solaris only since the start of OpenSolaris.
Why is this actually even relevant to you ?
I know I have always been curious about the structure of the Solaris
team and how it works. I do think it is a natural thing to wonder about
for us outside of Sun. After all, they part of the OpenSolaris team in
a way.
For some of us we work in OpenSolaris in the same or very similar roles
to what we do at Sun and for others it is completely different.
Lets take me as an example since I'm the only one I can talk about
freely and with authority ;-).
I proposed the OpenSolaris security community - no surprise there I'm a
security person and very active on our internal equivalent alias, but
knowing the internal Solaris structure you won't have been able to
determine that anyway.
I'm leading two projects zfs-crypto and loficc (crypto part) - again no
big surprise there I was doing those two things internally anyway and
they are part of my job.
I just proposed and started the Bluetooth project, why ? Because I can
and OpenSolaris allows me to get do this. I wouldn't normally have been
able to do this in Sun and I love that with OpenSolaris I can help start
things like this.
On the other hand I'd assert that it is no importance to the OpenSolaris
community who writes my annual report and who my director is (that is
really all that the internal Solaris structure would reveal in many
peoples cases). Just my opinion though, I highly suspect that other
engineers would see it differently.
