You could, and it sounds nice, but it's a trap. Sooner or later whoever does 
that runs into compatibility and integration problems with the OS/OE himself. 
Which compatibility and integration problems? Exactly! If you don't know or 
can't answer that question now, it's a sign of impending trouble.

One should *always* use the native packaging format of the OS/OE one is 
developing/porting/packaging for. Only the native format will be able to 
provide the best integration with the OS/OE across the board.

It's perhaps a lot of initial investment to learn all the target packaging 
formats, but that knowledge sure more than makes up in time savings, quality, 
and the ease of administration of the product and the environment down the road.

Maintaining some 3rd party format "of your own" that the vendor / OS/OE know 
nothing of and will not support is a sure way to have that approach backfire 
down the road... usually at the most inopportune moment.
