Somewhere between snv_55b and snv_60 (snv_58?) linker options in the Xorg
build have changed, which did break the Xv extension for ATI Radeon cards:

On a box with ATI video hardware I'm running Xorg with LD_NODIRECT=1
to work around this bug...
