GPL won't help Solaris too much imho nor will it make
Linux gain instant access to dtrace or zfs. Linux is
getting zfs...it is on the way already. But it won't
be the same...porting zfs over to Linux will not give
it the same quality. Look at the XFS fiasco.

In the article: In Sun's view, more developers writing
to its platform equals more revenue. To get there, the
company needs to make Solaris "palatable and effective
for people who traditionally use Linux," says Bob
Brewin, Sun's chief technology officer for software.
"And Solaris is seen by that community as lagging."

This focus on developers is bad imho. Solaris has more
than enough stuff to whack GNU/Linux without bringing
in its stability. Bob Brewin scores about making
Solaris palatable and effective for people who
traditionally use Linux. Solaris needs more drivers
and more developers may or may not help here. What Sun
really needs is to create that critical mass that
Linux has built up and what better way than to get
Linux people to move over just like they did to
Solaris now that things are on a more equal footing
hardware wise?

Nexenta is a step in the right direction but the alpha
marker and the fact/perception that its developers do
not have the resources to put it through test cycles
like that which Open Solaris gets may not attract the
attention of those who might put it in their servers.

I received my DVDs last week after waiting for weeks.
Now I would have to upgrade to get the latest. With
nexenta, it is quick and does not need an iso
download. Its mode of distribution allows mirroring
too and would permit the choice of performing an
installation from a local mirror without downloading
any iso.

You want users too, not developers only.
