If OpenSolaris/Indiana moves to an Ubuntu/MacOS X style "always log in
as a normal user, prompt for the root password when a command needs
root" (implemented using sudo on Ubuntu, not sure about MacOS X),
does the root shell issue not become moot? I.e., the root shell
can stay the same because most new users will rarely exec
a root shell, but will rather do all root things via sudo etc.?
I think it's actually already moot. I've been using Solaris since 2005
and have never had anything break with my root shell set to bash.
However, I think you're right. If the shell that is used to assume
"elevated privileges" (whether that's rbac, sudo, or whatever) is just
one used to do that and not the actual internal one for root, then
yes, that should pretty much eliminate the rather vague compatibility
arguments given so far.
I suspect, however, that most people wouldn't be able to tell the
difference between ksh93 and bash once proper defaults for tab
completion were setup. In fact, as a long-time bash user (1996?), I
think I much prefer the menu completion selection thing that Roland
has going for ksh93.
Perhaps it's better just to say "shell of choice" instead of bash ;)
