It is part of the spec: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Java_software_support "trade show, it was announced that Sun Microsystems' Java cross-platform software environment would be included in all Blu-ray Disc players as a ****mandatory**** part of the standard." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BD-J "All Blu-ray Disc players supporting video content are required to support BD-J." Java is required, thus it is important. I'm smart enough to know that Java is just data on the disc and doesn't actually affect the media format itself. The point is, Sun's involvement is at that level.
