+1.
Lets not forget here, Sun *does* own the OpenSolaris mark. I dislike
Sun's usurpation of what was at least a *perceived* community property
as much as anyone else. But its not fair not to let them have at least
equal participation.
Now, to Ian, Sara, and the other Project Indiana folks: I suspect I'm
not alone in the belief that the community really can benefit from
having an OpenSolaris reference distro, and that Indiana may even be
likely to be the best candidate for such a moniker. But I also believe
that some token effort to at least ask for community buy-in is also
warranted, if you really want the community to believe that the Indiana
Project leadership is participating in the community, and not just
trying to act as a dictator (benevolent or otherwise).
The fact that the mark is perceived as a community property means that
the rules for its use need to be very different from those for other
marks owned by Sun. Otherwise, please just come out and tell us that
you have no such plans to hand over any kind of control, so that the
community can go off and try to figure out another way to identify
itself that is not totally subject to usurpation at some marketing
manager's whim.
