"OpenSolaris" is a codebase, not a distribution. Things were just fine until
Ian was brought onboard in a large publicity stunt typical for Sun, after which
it was promptly decided that "OpenSolaris" is to become a downloadable
"distribution", and Sun chose to be the one and only entity which could
effectivly use the name, in addition to deciding theirs was the only
"distribution" that would actually be named "OpenSolaris", which caused
controversy.

Not to be outdone, SX:DE was done away with in favor of the "OpenSolaris"
Linux-like hack job, causing further controversy. I am willing to put money on
a bet that these moves will count among those famous "in retrospective, we
screwed up and should have done things differently" moments, of which Sun has
amassed an amazing collection of over the years.

And it's just like you wrote, you hit the nail on the head: it's nothing more
than a marketing tool.
