whoohoo, i got gnome in the resolution I want : ))) thanks all!

still a little screwy sometimes, I think. For example, i was away for
supper, and the monitor went to sleep. When i got back, i couldn't
revive the gnome session. Not sure if I have anything duplicable
though. Let me play around more.
