Sun did plan to include star with Solaris 10. You would need to ask Sun
why this did not hyppen yet.

The star code is ready and waitung for integration since 2004.

gtar cannot be compared with star as gtar only implements about half of the 
features from star.

star is the oldest free tar implementation and was started in 1982.

gtar did start in spring 1987 as "PD-tar" and in december 1987 as SUG-tar (Sun 
user group tar) and was later taken over by the FSF. Social problems with 
Stallman did let at least three maintainers give up with gtar. This is a reason 
why the gtar source is a rag rug...

star is under contnuous development by the same person since 27 years.
