Could you try the following test:

1) Try running gnome-volume-control. You will notice at the top there
is a "Device:" combo box which should have two possible options. One
is "audiohd#0 (OSS v4 Audio Mixer)" and the other is "Unknown Volume
Control 1 (Sun Audio Mixer)". Make sure the setting is "audiohd#0
   (OSS v4 Audio Mixer)".

2) Right click on the mixer volume control applet and click on
"Preferences". This will pop-up a dialog with a similar combo-box at
the top. Also make sure that the setting is "audiohd#0 (OSS v4
   Audio Mixer).

If one, or both of these is set to use the old SunAudio interfaces,
then audio can misbehave as you describe. This can happen on upgrade
if a user had previously set their preference to the Sun Audio one.

At some point, we plan on removing the SunAudio plugin completely from
GStreamer, but this cannot happen until Sun Ray supports OSS. By
default, GStreamer picks the right plugin for the platform. However,
this autodetection can get broken if a user has (perhaps accidently)
specified a particular mixer to use in either the gnome-volume-control
or mixer applet program.

Is this your problem?
