Agreed, and you're right. Perhaps you might answer me this: 1. SX:CE, the closest one has ever come to Solaris 11, is being killed 2. it has been stated on more than one occasion, that OpenSolaris the distribution is the way forward. But with OpenSolaris a) being radically different and b) not being in any shape or form ready for the enterprise, as stated here, what do you believe, or what is your personal vision of what will replace Solaris 10 in the enterprise space? With SX:CE, the ISVs like myself have at least had a chance to test our software and prepare for the future, and be ready for Solaris 11 (such as it was until now); now, with the decision to kill SX:CE, the very ground we stand on is being pulled from underneath us! Sure OpenSolaris might have SVR4 packaging tools, but it is no secret that those are meant for backward compatibility only - which means that sooner or later someone intends for the ISVs to migrate fully to IPS, or be stuck with something that will become akin to /usr/ucb. In my view, that is not a particularly warming or reassuring prospect, ultimately, all the units of work which we packaged up are obsolete, and the only way we can even begin to port to the new system is double effort and trying to execute the work using SMF as the back door. Now THAT is broken by design, "works-as-designed". System engineers and developers shouldn't have to resort to using SMF as the back door to reach CMM level 2 and above. > [BTW, like everything else you see on this mailing > list, from everyone else > involved, this is *me* speaking, one person, not the > voice of the company. > If you want an official Sun statement, contact the > press office for a finely > tuned press release in which all the content is > scrutinized and sanitized.] Understood. And thank you for your thoughts. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
