This is probably tied to X 3d feature stuff, I encountered the
same problem& was able to trigger the white screen of doom when
I tested to see if I could do something more lively with my GeForce
9500 GT than the 'none' settings... I'm still trying to figure
out where gdm-setup& the other gdm-utils went though, so I'm
not going to claim to be totally up on the internals of the 'live'
stuff& ips goodness.

The new GDM 2.28 was integrated into build 130. This replaces the
old GDM 2.20 which was in previous builds. The new GDM is a complete
rewrite of the code, and does not yet support a graphical configuration
program like gdmsetup. One is in the works, and should be available
in the next GNOME release cycle or so. Refer here:

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=587750

Note that the gdm(1m) manpage does explain, in detail, how to configure
the new GDM using CLI commands. Also note that the new GDM does not
support as many configuration options as the old GDM. For example, the
new GDM no longer supports gdmgreeter style XML themes. This is because
the old gdmgreeter themes depends on libgnomecanvas which has been
deprecated by the upstream GNOME community, and has serious problems
like the fact that it does not support a11y very well.
