Ian, Erik's a frakkin endlessly blithering idiot about all of this. He doesn't know what he's talking about, he doesn't know Sun's history, and he damn sure doesn't know how things work in the real customer world. Personally I really wish he'd stfu until he has something useful to say other than a pile of pole smoking mainframe worship. All of my computers, most of which have some variety of sparc cpu in them, are desktop systems. I could go on at length about all the ways that he's wrong, how he's wrong, and do it all on a case by case basis. However I'm not a pedant, and I don't like arguing with them. Thinking about if I might need to f-rt or not is a more useful way to spend the time than doing that. I'm just glad I don't have to work with him. Reading his offal is bad enough, as he's a firehose of FUD who isn't doing anything good for anyone here for sure.
