Basically, that would be something like the various BSD distributions,
sans all this third-party cruft like ports/pkgsrc/packages (including,
X, GNOME, etc, etc,...) which would be managed separately.

If that minimalist distro were able to compile itself from /usr/src
directly, esp. from /usr/src fetched via Mercurial, it would be even
better.
